REPORT ON LWML CONVENTION IN MANKATO
“God’s GPS – Turn Right at the Light” was the theme of the 23rd biennial convention of the Minnesota South District Lutheran Women’s Missionary League held June 25-27 at the Verizon Center in Mankato, MN. The following is a report filed by Darlene Johnson after she and Mea Hurley attended as delegates from Eternal Hope Lutheran.
It was journey indeed! Mea Hurley and I traveled to Mankato, MN for the 23rd Biennial Convention of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League in June.
Missionary Education: Listening to our Bible Study leader, Nabil Subin Nour, was very informative. He shared how we should witness to our Muslim neighbors. Dr. Nour was born in Nazareth, Israel, and he was baptized as Christian. At the age of 16, he came to the United States. He is now a pastor in South Dakota and he is studying the Muslim faith.
Missionary Inspiration: Rev. Dr. Lane Seitz, President of the MN South District, was the proclaimer for our opening communion service on Friday night. Prior to the service, we spent an hour in the tunnel of the convention center as there were tornado warnings posted that night. What a blessing to listen to the women sing hymns, without a book, as they had learned them and had the words in their hearts. President Seitz pointed out how our Bible, the Word, is our “GPS” in life.
Missionary Service: Wow! These women are truly servants of the Lord! They brought items for kits for the Lutheran Laymen’s League’s Orphan Grain Train, as well as school supplies, quilts and snacks for the LWML VBS at Concordia. They also worked on tying quilts, marking Bibles, and more while at the convention. The Quilting group from Eternal Hope sent along two quilts as well as other items received for the kits. Our group also sent along a love offering of $100 to give for the Mite offering. Thank you, ladies of Eternal Hope, for all of your generous support! The “Gifts from the Heart” collection included 88 packages of children’s underwear and 127 packages of socks for the Orphan Grain Train and 109 health kits for Lutheran World Relief to be sent to Haiti.
A Mission Goal of $240,000 was established for the 2010-2011 Biennium. Twenty-five per cent of this amount, or $60,000 will go to support the National LWML mite goal. $180,000 of the total mite goal will be divided among 12 various and well-deserving needs and institutions (Please check your August newsletter for the specific recipients of these funds).
Four offerings were taken at the convention.
# 1 – Minnesota South LWML Mission Goal $7,391.22
# 2 – Camp Omega Campership Fund $4,031.33
# 3 – MN So. Mission Fund for Start up Congs. $4,088.07
# 4 – POBLO (People of the Book Luth. Outreach) This organization works with Muslims in Detroit, MI).
